Child Marriage : A Disaster

By the single cultural practice of Child Marriages, so many  fragile lives  of small boys and girls are affected every day and this practice also starts the cascade of events, which not only affects the small innocent boy and girl but the whole society and country, directly or indirectly.
Some Facts :

  • 1/3 of the girls in this developing world are married before the age of 18 and 1 in 9 are married before the age of 15.
  • In 2012, 7 crores women aged 20-24 around the world had been married before the age of 18.
  • If present trends continue, 15 crores girls will be married before their 18th birthday over the next decade. That’s an average of 1.5 crores girls each year.
  • While countries with the highest prevalence of child marriage are concentrated in Western and Sub-Saharan Africa, due to population size, the largest number of child brides reside in South Asia.

In India :

Child Marriage is a part and parcel of our culture (that’s not a source of pride), almost all states have this ill custom.

According to recent UNICEF facts about India :

In 2011 Census :

It is still unbelievable that in present India, with so much penetration of social media and breaking news, still many parents does not know that child marriage is an offence.

You can have some idea from this :

Major Reasons :

(source : factly.in)

That’s why EDUCATION is one of the most important step towards eradication of child marriage.

CONSEQUENCES :

  1. Early pregnancy is leading cause of death of child marriage, alongwith HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases.
  2. Small Girls more likely to experience domestice violence from their husbands and family members. And because of this small brides may show signs of sexual abuse.

So in my opinion its our responsibilty, that if we get the oppurtunity to stop this evil practice, we should come forward and educate those who are in our reach, and helps the fragile lives to bloom 🙂

Note : I do not claim that the above figures are 100% true, but atleast these figures give us the idea of severity of problem.

  1. The facts are very disturbing Anshul. As you said, child marriages impact many other problems like sexual abuse, domestic violence and early pregnancy . If Modiji’s beti padhao campaign really goes to the corners of the rural India, the scene will change gradually.
